Why did I choose a career in the social media industry?
I was an unusual case. Unlike many others who grow up changing their professional paths on what seems to be, a weekly basis, I've actually only changed mine only once. After an admittedly short stint of wanting to study forensic science (following the release of the now popular TV show, CSI), I quickly realized where I truly wanted to be-- the big bad world of advertising and marketing. I love working in advertising and marketing because it allows me to fully utilize my talents & skills by meshing the worlds of business and creative together. The industry never ceases to amaze me with the variety of available mediums one can use to deliver a message. And, while I have much respect for print, broadcast, outdoor or other forms of media, digital and social media in particular have seemed to really resonate with me. I enjoy social media's ever-changing landscape and am fascinated by its overwhelming influence on culture & society. I look forward to furthering my knowledge and experience in the field while also attempting to stay up to date on all the latest platforms and trends!
What do I think is the most important aspect of social media?
Communication, hands down. A lot of people think that social media's sole objective is to provide information. It's not. Or, at least, it shouldn't be. Good social strategy is about sharing AND obtaining information. It's about creating a two-way conversation- showing your consumers the personality behind your brand and also taking the time to learn more about the community surrounding it. Consistent communication in particular, is key to maintaining successful social media outlets.
Like I always say, don't be too vain. People don't always want to hear about your brand. You have to be relevant to what's going on around them in their everyday lives. Once you're able to establish that connection, you're golden. It's very much comparable to making a new friend!
What's my favorite social media platform?
That's like asking someone what their favorite song is- it usually always depends on the moment! So, just as marketers like myself have to gauge the impact of timing on a social campaign, it's no wonder that people (again, like myself) prefer different platforms depending on the time of day, or moment in their lives. Nevertheless, you can usually catch me perusing Instagram on multiple occasions throughout the course of a day. Why? Because it's quick and visual.
What type of clients do I like to work with?
Well, I've worked work with a mixture of clientele, from small businesses to corporate brands and across a variety of industries. Running the gamut from local retailers & restaurants, to well-known personalities and consumer brands- I've been fortunate enough to work with a lot of really great companies. Overall, I'd have to say that I truly enjoy working with small businesses. Being that my mother used to have her own business- and since I'd like to start my own someday, as well- I'm a big supporter of small business success. Having lived in NYC and now being back upstate in Albany, NY while watching Troy, NY experience it's own unique revitalization has given me the opportunity to follow & support many locally-based small businesses from start-up phases, through their success. It's such an exciting process to follow! And, as far as, my favorite industries to work with- that's a tough one since my personal interests span so many categories! Food, travel, technology and culture are just a few that top the list :)
